10 things to remember before starting on DIY cosmetics

Making cosmetic products at home in your own kitchen is a fun activity. You can personalize your product and use your favorite scent, color, jar and label. Once you have gathered the ingredients you need, you are ready to go. But there are a few simple things you need to remember before getting started.

NO INTERRUPTIONS

Make sure there are no interruptions once you start your production. You should arrange all the required utensils and ingredients at one place to avoid any rush and subsequently error.

WORK AREA

You need to find a work area that is well ventilated and that has a flat and stable working surface. A kitchen will do just fine. You also need to have access to water and various supplies like a kitchen scale.

PROPER ATTIRE

Wear clothes that are appropriate and always remember protective gloves when you handle hot utensils. Keep tissue or blotting paper handy if you need them for cleaning.

READ THE RECIPE CAREFULLY

Read the complete recipe before starting. You should also read the labels of the ingredients and the technical information like Certificate of Analysis, if that is provided. That will make you familiar with the steps of the recipe and the properties of the ingredients.

CLEANLINESS

Make sure that all the utensils, containers or jars are clean, so you avoid any cross contamination.

SMALL BATCH

Prepare small batches with the required quantities of each ingredient.

AVOID OVERHEATING

Avoid direct heating on flames. Instead use the double container method. In one big container take water and use another small vessel for melting butters or heating other ingredients. Most of recipes in cosmetic does not need heating beyond 100 degrees Celsius.

ATTENTITIVE

Do not leave your production unattended at any time.

LABELLING

When you have made your cosmetic product, make sure to transfer it to containers and store them appropriately. Remember to put on a label with a date.

STORAGE

You should keep your cosmetic ingredients separate from other items in your kitchen. Just to avoid them getting mixed unintentionally.

Now you are all set and ready to go.

Have a great time.
